NATIONAL throughput so far this week, at NLRS reported saleyards, declined 14 per cent to 48,406 head, pushed by all States with the exception of Tasmania and recording smaller yardings compared to last week.

While Roma Store recorded the same number as last week, smaller yardings at both Toowoomba and Warwick saw the Queensland total decline 5pc to 11,899 head.

With almost 1700 fewer head yarded at Wagga and CTLX, and Forbes and Tamworth recording smaller yardings, total consignments in NSW declined 11pc to 21,697 head.

Victoria yarded 10,941 head, back 21pc, with all saleyards recording reduced throughput.

WA and SA yarded 1713 head and 1886 head respectively, back 33pc and 29pc week-on-week. Tasmania recorded 270 head, up 60 head on last week.

Quality mixedWhile buyer attendance was solid at the Queensland saleyards, quality slipped in places, and, with limited rain over the past fortnight, prices eased across all categories.

The decline in quality was evident among the young cattle at Warwick and the yearlings heifers at Roma Store were of plainer condition, attributing to easing prices.

The quality of secondary cattle was mixed at Wagga Wagga but secondary and well finished yearlings still sold to solid feedlot demand.

Quality was good at CTLX with solid numbers of finished grown steers and cows.

In contrast, while quality was overall good at Gunnedah, there were limited numbers of finished grown cattle on offer.

For the opening sale of NVLX Barnawatha (replacing the Wodonga sale) quality was mixed across all categories and there were increased numbers of plainer cattle, showing the effects of the drying summer.

Prices cool offAt the close of Tuesday’s markets, the Eastern Young Cattle Indicator (EYCI) was back seven cents week-on-week, finishing at 443.00 cents a kilogram carcase weight.

Trade steers eased five cents on last week, averaging 229c, and medium steers were back 6c, averaging 215c/kg. Feeder steers eased 3c, averaging 245c, and heavy steers declined 6c, finishing at 227c/kg. Medium cows averaged 178c, back 14c/kg week-on-week.
